Acting Resume

Karla Mosley was born and raised in Westchester, NY by a band-singing, basketball-playing father and a musical theater-loving mother. Her career began in her bedroom where she would choreograph and direct her sister and stuffed animals in full length productions, starring, of course, Karla Mosley (a natural born producer, she would then charge her family and friends a nickle as entrance fee and force them to sit quietly through the entire show).

Congruent with her sunny personality, Karla’s first public performance was at age 9 in the local children’s theater production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. She played Happy. It was also around this time that Karla discovered her “Broadway Belt” while singing “Shy” from Once Upon a Mattress. From this moment on, every bit of free time Karla had was spent in the theater.

Karla continued to expand her skills through High School when she performed such diverse roles as Dorothy in The Wiz, Meg in Little Women, Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (which sent her High School to perform in the thespian festival in Lincoln, NE), Sandy in Grease, the Narrator in Joseph, Leading Player in Pippin and many more. She was also a violinist for twelve years, played the piano and was a member of the All State Jazz Choir.

In 1999, due to generous scholarships and great perseverance, Karla moved an hour downstate into New York City to attend NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. While there, Karla attended CAP21 musical theater studio, the Experimental Theater Wing (ETW) and studied community-based theater. She was also able to travel abroad and study in Amsterdam, South Africa, and Cuba. The summer after graduating from NYU, Karla traveled to France to study in the Roy Hart Voice Institute.

Karla’s life took a surprising turn the summer after her junior year of college. After performing a friend’s play, Karla signed with her manager (the incomparable Breanna Benjamin) and landed her 2nd professional audition ever! It was for a children’s television show called Hi-5 – and it was scheduled to start filming in Sydney, Australia just 30 days later.

Despite some apprehension about moving so far, leaving her studies and her community-based theater work, Karla packed her bags and made the 22 hour overseas journey to her new home Down Under.

Luckily, that was right decision. Karla was able to graduate as planned in the spring of 2003 and Hi-5 was a hit! Now in its fourth year on TLC and Discovery Kids, the cast has enjoyed 3 Emmy Nominations, airplay on 3 continents, a live stage tour, appearances on all the major US morning shows and a float in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. The cast has also produced numerous CDs and DVDs and a line of Merchandise.

Perhaps more rewarding, however, beyond the lights, camera and action, Karla has been blessed to work with incredibly talented and kind people and to develop an astoundingly loyal fan base. For all this she is deeply grateful.

These days, Karla is back in NYC, close to her family, friends and gorgeous kitties. Though she misses her Hi-5 family, she is happy to be able to work on new projects as she continues to develop as an actor, as a person and, most recently, as a producer.

In addition to her onstage and onscreen endeavors, Karla has been able to sit on the board of a theater company, run workshops for local teens and volunteer at her favorite yoga studio. She is a firm believer that we must give back what we have so graciously been given.
